Product management is the work needed to have a desirable, feasible, and viable product for any software-based business.
"Desirability" is evaluating if customers actually want or need your product. And the way to evaluate desirability is by stacking enough evidence that indeed validates that your solution is needed.
"Feasibility" is evaluating if you and your team can actually build what customers need. On the other hand, "Viability" is evaluating if it makes sense from a business perspective to build your product.
It's important to note that these 3 elements revolve in a continuous cycle with every cycle unlocking new information about your customers, product, and business.
The key role of a product manager in a startup is to make sure that the product helps customers realize their needs in alignment with the startup's overall business objective saving startups the time and money to reach their next milestone.
For a startup to get to product-market fit, not only does the product have to be desirable, feasible, and viable, but their needs to be a clear strategy on how to get there. A great product strategy ensures that (1) all relevant stakeholders are aligned on a common vision, (2) a product strategy is broken down into measurable goals, and (3) a product strategy needs to have high level initiatives that helps startups realize those goals and ultimately the vision.
A great product strategy sets the direction for your startup helping everyone work towards a common goal and in harmony.
A great product strategy is best articulated through a product roadmap.
A great product roadmap is one that is explainable, executable, and is easy to adapt.
"Adaptable" in early stage startups means that startups are willing to pivot from their original plan when they realize that they need to change their approach to meet their customer needs and achieve their business goals through their product.
"Explainable" means that startups might have different versions of the same product roadmap that are tailored to specific stakeholders. A product roadmap that is needed to explain the direction with the tech team is different than a product roadmap placed on a pitch deck for investors.
"Executable" means that startups can transform their roadmaps into themes, epics, user stories and sprints that make it easy for the design team or tech team to understand and deliver.
